I did search a couple of months ago and http://www.vrbo.com had many apartment options in Venice. With that many people an apartment will be a good value, if you can get one for only two nights. In high season that may be a problem.

We have used www.veniceapartments.org in the past with good luck. this group also gets good reviews: www.viewsonvenice.com As far as location, we try to stay away from the area around the train station and the portion of Santa Croce that is very close to Piazzale Roma. Our favorites are Dorsoduro and Castello around Campo Snata Maria Formosa. Many apartments may have 3 night minimums.

We went with 2 adults and 3 children, ages 8 to 16. Before I arrived (mid October) I called Hotel d'Art to see what they had to offer. They gave me a decent apartment for a very reasonable rate. They apologized that it wasn't fancy but it was perfect for us - clean, perfectly functional and well located (near the Rialto bridge).

Sue - if you can add a night to your stay in Venice, you may have better luck. You'll also enjoy it more. ;-) However, if you are locked into only a two night stay and you find something that might work for you, try inquiring via email to see if it might be available for the two nights. In the past landlords were fairly strict in their terms, many times only renting Saturday to Saturday. But these days with shorter stays available, they may have a hole in the schedule to fill and might rent for only two nights.
