Family Itinerary help - trip to Italy

Hi everyone,

We have booked our flights and have most of our nights planned out with the exception of the last 3 nights.

Here are the details:

  • We land in Rome and return to Canada from Milan for a total of 12 nights
  • 4 nights in Rome
  • 3 nights in Florence
  • 2 nights in Riomaggiore
  • We need advice for the last 3 nights. We were originally thinking of staying the last 3 nights in Milan but are starting to steer away from that idea since we would have spent a fair bit of time in big cities. Knowing that we leave from Milan, what does the Rick Steves community think? Is Parma an interesting choice for a couple nights? Anything else?

Thanks

If there are things in Parma that you wish to see and do you should stay there. Be sure to be in Milan the night before your flight.

Approximately what time does your flight leave Milan?

Another option is to add 1-2 nights to Florence & take a day trip to Lucca/ Pisa or Siena.

By the same token, if you add a night to Rome, you may want to take a day trip to Orvieto.

Keep in mind that 2 nights in any one location will give you one full day to explore said location...

So 3 nights = 2 full days and so on...

Priscilla is on the right track: add nights where you are already staying. I would stay at least 4 nights in the Cinque Terre, especially if you hike. A day spent going to Porto Venere is very nice on the ferry. An extra night or two in either Roma or Firenze would be nice. You can go to Ostia Antica from Roma or Siena or another hill town from Firenze. Head to Milan the morning of the day before your flight and see the Duomo, do some shopping.
