Family hotels in Venice, Florence and Rome

We are planning a family vacation to the above 3 cities. We will need 2 rooms...one for myself and spouse, the other for our married son, his wife and 2 sons ages 10 and 12 years. We will be in the cities for 3 nights with the exception of Florence which will be 2 nights. We are interested in convenient location within the city. We are not driving but using train from city to city. We will be traveling in July of next year (yes, I am planning ahead of time). We typically stay in the American version of 3 stars. Our favorite neighborhood in Rome when we travel by ourselves is the Trastevere district. We are open to other locations if necessary. It seems difficult finding a hotel that can accommodate a family of 4. I am looking for suggestions in each of these cities. Any suggestions appreciated. Many thanks.

Hotel Davanzati in Florence! They are wonderful! I stayed many years ago and they were very family friendly!!

I’m going back next week!

You are 6 adults: if you want to stay in an hotel, you'll need to book either 3 double rooms or 2 triple rooms.
Maybe on AirBnB you'll find a flat with 6 beds and only two bedrooms.

For your son's family, you will need a family room or a quad room (probably four single beds) and family rooms are not that common with many of the small hotels. Not sure what you mean by 3 stars. Italy the stars indicate the level of amenities not quality. Look to the Steves's Italia guidebooks for suggestion as well as booking web sites such as Hotel.com, Booking.com, etc.

To clarify...we are 4 adults and 2 children.

Thanks for the recommendation for Hotel Davanzati in Florence. That is exactly what I am looking for.

No, for an hotel you are 6 adults. A 12 years old doesn't need to stay in his parent's room and I'm afraid most hotels would think the same about the 10 years old kid.

Booking dot com is a really useful site for researching lodging options. You can filter by number of persons/adults/children, beds needed, rooms needed, amenities such as AC (which you must have in July) , elevator, etc

You can book on booking dot com or go to the hotel actual website and book there if you prefer.
It is likely too soon to see availability for July 2022- but you can certainly hunt for options now.

Also stayed at Hotel Davanzati.

Liked it a lot and would stay again.

Great location. Great owners.

Using booking.com, found 1000+ in Florence and 2500+ in Rome and ~1000 in Venice that had rooms to accommodate your son's family.

What budget limit you have may reduce the number available. Less than $300 per night were a decided minority

Dario, I think we have a little difference in culture here. In the U.S. an individual under the age of 18 is usually considered a minor and not an adult as they cannot vote, book a hotel room on their own, etc. Even in Italy, the State Museums consider an individual 17 years old or under eligible for free "child's" entry.

That said, some hotels may have age limits on what they consider adult versus child. Hotel Davanzati's website doesn't appear to separate their guests by age. I just tried to make a dummy online booking. and the site asked only for the number of people ages 0-99 you want a single room for; not, say, 2 adults and 2 children. For 4 people ages 0-99 in one room (random date) it came up with a double superior or Jr. suite that could accommodate your son, his wife and their 2 minor children. Other hotels may differentiate by age. Does this make sense?

Good catch, Kathy.

If yr price range defaults to triple rooms, what would it be like if you had the 12 yr old w you in one location and the 10 yr old in the next?

Years ago my friend, her husband, his recently widowed mom and their 2 kids, about the ages of yrs, did 10 days in Italy booking a double and a triple and rotated thru every possible combination of room mates and had a blast.

Places I have stayed with family. Venice - Hotel Tivoli, this is a clean “bare-bones” kind of place in a good neighborhood. Budget type. Florence - Hotel Pendini, very nice, not “budget,” excellent location. Rome - hotel Della torre Argentina; very good location; moderate type of place; eat breakfast elsewhere or buy food at the grocery store (despar, near Pantheon) and keep in room. Della Torre Argentina rooms have small refrigerators.

In Florence, we loved the 7 Florence which is directly across from the train station (very convenient) and easy walk to everything.
https://www.7florence.com/en/7florence/ Nice rooms easy access.

In Venice, we liked Hotel Abbazia https://www.abbaziahotel.com/ and Hotel Antiche Figure .https://www.hotelantichefigure.it/ Both were very accomodating to kids and a two-minute walk from the train station. It made traveling with luggage a lot easier, especially with kids.

In Rome, we loved the B&B Charme n Chic - steps away from Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Steps. Lots of restaurants and shopping. The rooms are large and have big screen TV's with Netflix which was great for wind-down time, etc. Includes breakfast in a very charming dining area. https://charmechic.com/

I am partial to Hotel Pendini. Fantastic hotel and a very central location that would be great for the younger ones. They also offer a quad and a family suite.

Family rooms are indeed rather scarce in Venice. I suggest you consider an apartment, not from Air B and B or other rental by owner sites, but from a reliable agency. We like Venice Red House and have used them two times and are booked for a third stay in 2022. They are local ( Venetian), they manage lots of apartments, and have a very liberal cancellation policy. They will meet you at your vaporetto stop and guide you to the apartment to help you get settled in. We really like having the extra space and the opportunity to make our own meals with ingredients from the Rialto fish and produce markets. So wouldn't you, I'll bet.

Here are a couple of examples of nice modern apartments that sleep 6, with 2 bathrooms, clothes washer, etc., in excellent locations:

https://www.veniceredhouse.com/apartments-in-venice/ai-turchesi-apartment/ For €280 a night next July

https://www.veniceredhouse.com/apartments-in-venice/the-lions-apt-5-on-the-canal/ For £242 a night

We spent a month in the nearby Lions House #4 and loved the location, near Campo San Lido (and a great gelato shop on your way to Rialto bridge). There is a small Coop supermarket just down the street ( Salizzate San Lido) and a larger, very modern supermarket (whose name I forget) about ten minutes' walk away.

Lots more to choose from; I just picked these as examples because I like the location and the price, and I prefer bright, modern decor over dark and ornate with heavy furniture.

My faves for family rooms or Apartments that sleep 4 or 6 are below. We travel with two boys about the same age as yours and most of the below have laundry and a door you can close between sleeping quarters.

Ten years ago (I know, a long time) our family stayed in two rooms at the Astoria Garden Hotel in Rome. My husband and I and kids (8 and 12) shared a quad and my mom had a single. It was a charming place with a cool garden out back, nice breakfast, and easy access to the metro. https://www.hotelastoriagarden.it/en/index.php
