My grandmothers family was from Italy. We will be traveling there for the first time in September. I am not sure what town they lived in. Does anyone know of a site that I may be able to access this type information?
Thanks,
Marcia
Marcia, try interviewing family members for more specific information. Also, try researching documents at Ellis Island. My sister was able to find travel dates for my grandfather going back and forth to Italy to get my grandmother. She did it all online.
Good luck, John
Thanks so much. I will check to see what I can find. I am not able to interview other family members that would know. My grandmother and her sibilings are deceased. My Dad will be traveling with me. We know the last names but that is all that we know. He is not expecting us to find anything but I thought it would be a nice surprise for him. Thanks again.

There has to be immigration records, naturalization, etc. and probably digitized. Go to Ancestry.com for probably the best collection of records. It is a fee site so pay for one month or go to your public library. Most public libraries have a genealogy section with free access to many of the genealogy web sites. Also look at census records for her US residency. Census often listed place of birth. I think the latest census available is 1910 and prior decades. It should be a very simple and quick task. BUT, be prepared for misspelling of the last name when looking for the record.
Marcia,
Good luck in your search! I love going to Italy with my father in law to visit the village where he was born and to visit with cousins who still live there.
The others have given you good starting points. Do pay attention to the miss-spelled names. Italian names were quite often shortened - or spelled phonetically.
You could try the old fashioned way - and check telephone listings for the name. Maybe google it!
Safe Travels!
Marcia,
Try this link to the Ellis Island website:

You will need a name and year of birth. Good Luck.
