Leaving in a week!. Can anyone make it a recommendation on a family friendly restaurant in Rome and Venice? Most of the posts I’ve found on here seem to be referencing some of the top places, which I assume won’t be the most kid friendly.
We’re not looking just to eat pizza every night😉

Top restaurants are happy to serve kids, just like the other not-so-top places or the family run restaurants. If they weren't it wouldn't be your problem, but theirs.

Where are you staying? Maybe we can add something that is geographically helpful for dinner when you are tired.
For lunch, stop in a bar, which is really a cafe in North American terms and semi-self serve, or any appealing little trattoria for something not fussy.

We found in Europe, they take children to all levels of restaurants, not child friendly ones like in the US.

Most restaurants in Italy are kid friendly as when Italians eat out it tends to be the whole family from grandparents to babes in arms. Do not be surprised to see kids at restaurants late in the evening. Monti is an area with lots of restaurants so you should have no difficulty in finding places to eat. The RS guide books provide useful info on dining out Italian style.

I see a lot of mentions that reservations are often needed, especially if you want to dine outdoors. Is this the type of thing that one could arrange while walking around during the day (ie, walk up and ask the host for a table reserved later that evening)?

From our experience reservations are expected more so than the US. If we know where we intended to eat in the evening, we often would walk by around noon and make a reservation and it always was appreciated. Some restaurants will close in the 1-5 , 2-7 period in the afternoon so you need to make the reservation in the morning or when they are open at lunch. We thought that our treatment was better with reservations than just walking up for a table. Second, sometimes the restaurant will not open till 7 or 7.30 pm.

From Campo San Steph, walk across the Academia bridge, and keep going until you hit the Zattere. On the Zattere, you will find many places to eat. Nico’s Gelateria (now not operated by Nico, and serving much more than gelato) is worth a look. The outside tables, over the Giudecca canal are fun, a parade of every sort of boat you can imagine. (No cruise liners, though. Yaaay.)

Dinner reservations are usually from 7 or even 7.30. There are more casual places to eat if you want an earlier meal but will probably rely heavily on pastas and pizzas. You may need to make reservations a day in advance.

Check out Snack Bar on Via Firenze near Hotel Aberdeen. Do not be skeptical of the name. It is very rustic, authentic, delicious, and very affordable. You can see more info on Trip Advisor. We were staying at the Hotel Aberdeen, just arrived and very hungry. As we were heading out to find a decent restaurant there was a sudden deluge of rain, my friend said it was holy water in its purest form. We decided to just get a little something there and go back to the hotel to relax. Boy, what a wonderful meal we had with a bottle of wine. I think it was one of the best and least expensive meals on our 2-week trip.
