Family European Adventure - Italy Stop

So we are doing an epic Month in Europe this summer. And we will be in Switzerland first, and then stopping in Munich to see Dachau for one of my kids, and then Saltsburg for the Sound of music tour, and then we are taking a night train(hopefully if I can figure it out) from Salzburg(Thank you) to Rome.

We will be there from a Tuesday to Friday evening, then we are flying to Scotland for the next let.

I am looking for a good place to get a VRBO for the family, or are hotels reasonable enough? Some of my research suggests the Treveste? area for a VRBO is a good sweet spot.

We'd like to do the Vatican city, and then many of the old sights another day and the third day other interesting areas.

I planned on local buses while we are there. Trying to food and culture! We can't wait. Going in last week of June.

Thanks for your help!

You'll have much better luck finding a train if you start with "Salzburg" instead of "Saltsburg". This page has info about the options: https://www.seat61.com/international-trains/trains-from-Salzburg.htm#Salzburg-Italy Some of the tickets go on sale 6 months out so you'll need to hop right on it as you'll need more than one cabin.

I myself can't imagine taking a family of 7 on a sleeper train and having everyone arrive remotely refreshed in Rome, a very busy and chaotic place. I'd make the Tuesday arrival day as low key as possible. Hopefully our Italy experts will weigh in on options for accommodations for 7 (you might want to include that info in your post in case they miss the link to your other post).

I would take a train to Munich and fly to Rome.

An overnight train across borders is likely to require changes, so no real sleep ( I didn't do any research)
That sounds miserable.

"""stopping in Munich to see Dachau for one of my kids,""""
How old is that kid? !
From their website:
""Is the Memorial Site appropriate for children?
There is no special exhibition for children at the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial, and some of the content may not be appropriate for children under 13. It is therefore recommended that children visit the Memorial only when accompanied by their parents.
All of the programs offered by the Education Department are for visitors aged 13 and above."""
I really would not bring a kid to Dachau. It is much too disturbing and could ruin their whole holiday.

That kid is 15. I have 17, 15, 13, 9, 7, and the younger are not going to be going into Dachau. we'll find something else for them. All the kids learn about the holocaust in middle school so we thought the 13 yo would be right at the right spot. the younger two may be on a walk with Dad, getting something sweet

The night train has no changes, from what I am seeing, we don't have to change trains once we leave Austria. It was partly for the experience and we will get to Rome and have the whole day to relax. I'm looking at a VRBO in Trastevere for the rest of the week.

Thanks for the support and guidance!

Hi!

I have done overnight trains twice in Europe. Not the best night sleep, but still a fun experience. One trip included a group of high school students and they loved it. Given the ages of your children, I would imagine they might find it a fun experience.

We typically stay are AirBNBs near the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. We find it to be a nice area and fairly central for our interests. We have walked from that neighborhood to the Vatican, Coliseum, and all sorts of areas in between. It is also a good location for public transit (easy cabs to the airport in the morning). If you will be there the last week of June, you may need to start with what is available and then work backwards to the best location

hey hey davidskeith
you should get started ASAP for accomodations, you have 7 people which maybe an issue for that many with some having a maximum of 4. it's high season for summer and late getting started with so many booked for at least 6 months to a year, list all people in party and what your amenities you need. pack light and look for a washer/dryer, 2 or 3 bathrooms, some places may charge for linens, like the area of piazza navona area. the vatican will take hours waiting in hot sun, some do a private early morning tour
any certain activities you hope/want to see, book at direct website. date & time stamp, some maybe booked already. you're planning a lot of crowded places and moving around. read up about the train, especially night trains. not much to see at night, getting into city early mornings with check-ins at 3-4pm and check out 10-11am, do your research
hope all works out for you and have a great time
aloha

I just took a quick look on booking.com for a random date in July. Lots of apartments still with 3 bedrooms. There seemed to be lots in the Monti area, which is fairly close to the train station for dropping your bags and is a fairly easy walk to the Coliseum. There were also a few near the Vatican itself. Do you meant Trastevere when you say Treveste? I found that area to be very crowded last time I was there.
