Family Best of Europe Tour - Venice question

In looking at the itinerary, I see the tour stays at a Lido hotel. I assume this is so the kids have a beach/pool. Has anyone been on this tour? Have you missed being in Venice proper, in the midst of everything, with the wonderful early mornings and evenings when the daytrippers are gone? I would love to take family on this tour, but wonder about staying in a Lido hotel.

Never been on a RS tour, but have been to Venice many times. I would never choose to stay on the Lido. Every single thing you want to do on Venice Island requires a vaporetto trip to the island and then back (assuming you want to stay the night in your Lido hotel). If you really want a beach day then why not make a daytrip to the Lido and then return to your hotel on Venice Island?

I would not want to stay on Lido, either. It is more of a place to visit for a couple of hours. There is nothing like staying in Venice and experiencing it.

I have stayed in Venice a few times but when we went on the Family Tour, our group did stay at a hotel on the Lido. It was a wonderful and welcome choice for all of us. I'm not sure if it's the same hotel or not but I hope it is; wonderful place with a wonderful staff. Frankly, I was happy to leave the crowds and the hustle and bustle of the island and return to the peace and quiet of the Lido in the late afternoon/evenings. The beach is nice and our kids loved it. Staying here provided a nice bit of downtime on a very busy tour in a very busy place. My husband and I returned on our own and stayed in the same hotel for 10 days the next year, we enjoyed it that much. DIdn't miss not being IN Venice at all.

The Lido, while being part of the Commune, is not Venice. Stay in Venice.

OP is talking about taking her family on a RS Tour so would stay where the tour is staying.

Hille, I know you've done tours before and altho I have not done this one, I would feel comfortable with how they structure things. By the time you get to Italy you are on Days 8 and 9 of the tour, so more than 1/2 way thru. I liked Andi's first-hand description of her experience with it and agree that by this time some of the kids may be in overload and a beach experience might be just the thing!

It sounds like so much fun! I like either itinerary - this one with Amsterdam, Germany and Italy as well as the other one that has London, Paris and Switzerland!!

Thank you Tim, Charlotte, Andi, Peter and Pam for your responses. I have been to Venice a number of times, and if I were going alone, I would definitely stay in Venice, not Lido. I
appreciate the perspective mentioned by Andi and Pam. That's kind of what I thought ... for the kids, and kind of a mid-tour break.

Thanks again, all. ;)

How old are the kids? That might change things a bit.
You can hire bicycles on the Lido, and it is easy pedalling along the murassi, the sea wall. Flat as a tack.

Family would include a 12 year old girl. Thanks for the bike rental suggestion, Peter.
