Fall in Italy

We have been to Italy many times, 4-5 times in Florence, Rome, Venice, once in Cortona, Montepulciano, Positano, Verona, We are looking at booking a trip to France and Italy for Fall 2021, depending on COVID regulations, airfare, etc. I understand from a thread on the France side, that this might be the year to pick just one country to go to since it is still so unclear the ease of traveling from one country to the next and the requirements involved in crossing borders. We have been to Paris a lot, but never the South of France. We considered flying to Paris, spending a few days, then train to Avignon, or fly to Nice, and explore the regions, and then, if it's not too much of a hassle, cross over into the Lakes region of Italy. We haven't been to Cinque Terre, but I am wondering if it's really all that different from Amalfi Coast. So, the advice we seek, is what would be great places in Italy to visit we haven't been to? We like food, wine, window shopping, local bars/pubs, and a little adventure. The only museums we really like are ones like the Vatican, or the Accademia, and such. Abd charm of course. Any thoughts on the mountainous regions of Italy as well or suggestions? Thinking Milan doesn't have that much to offer other than high-end shopping. Have no problem renting a car in France, but would rather train it in Italy.

Try Cinque Terre; it will probably be a good time to go since things will not be back to the normal crowded with the tourists cruise ship stop situation it had become; it feels more compact compared to the Amalfi Coast. You can take the train from Nice to get there.

Fall in Italian wine country sounds like absolute perfection to me. I don’t see that you’ve been to Piedmont. Have you looked into Torino or Cuneo? Those are large cities that you could visit, or Alba in wine country. We stayed in Monforte d’Alba which is a small hill town. Bra, Asti, Barolo……all great choices as well. The choices for wine and food tours are endless in this region.
