We leave in 19 days for Italy and it's my first time out of the country. I have food allergies and was wanting to pack extra snacks (like special granola bars and other prepackaged dried foods). Do you have to consume all foods you bring before landing in Italy or is it just fruits and fresh items like that?
The only concern would be liquid or gel items that will not make it through security and fresh fruits, vegetables and meats which may be subject to Customs restrictions. The items you mention will be fine. I would suggest though, do not go overboard and try to stock up for the whole trip, there are great items there you can pick up in grocery stores and markets to cover you for a few days at a time.
I have food allergies and travel with lots of food for myself. No fresh fruit/veggies though. Make sure you bring your own medicines for your allergy - I travel with 2 Epi Pens, a lot of Benadryl (not for sale in Italy at all) and my Zyrtec. Make sure you bring an allergy card in Italian that states what your allergy is. If it's a really serious anaphylactic/emergency room allergy, make sure your card says that specifically.
Thank you! I have benadryl and 2 epipens and my prescription for another and zyrtec. I just kept reading that you have to throw things away and I'm taking about 12 granola type bars (one per day for emergencies). Our tour guide wants us to only have carry on so I just don't want all my food confiscated upon landing. It's all store bought/prepackaged. Everything I have been reading says they will make you throw it away but never mentioned if it was home packed or store bought. Just had a few mentions of fruits, dairy and meats which isn't what I was packing. So thanks for the help!!
Pre-packaged, individually sealed, commercially produced foods will be fine! Don't worry about that. It's the fresh fruit/veg/meat that would have to be thrown away.
I take a ziplock of organic almonds- no problems with customs. They're great to quell hunger between meals.
...Everything I have been reading says they will make you throw it away ..... Don't know what or where you are reading. But, that will not happen because there is no inspection - anywhere. Walk off the plane, go through immigration, get your bags if you have checked luggage and walk through the Green Door - Nothing to Declare - at customs. Generally no one is at the door so unless you walk over to the customs desk no one is going to ask what you have packed.
Coming back to the US is a whole different issue. The US is very interested in what you are carrying.
You can find great dried fruits, nuts, and snacks in Italy. If you have a gluten intolerance, Schar is a brand available in pharmacies and many grocery stores.
I brought a bunch of Kind bars in my carryon, no problem.
Be sure to bring plenty of Benadryl as it is flat out not available in Italy. Not even with a prescription.
