we will have an extra full day in Rome with kids 9, 10, and 13. We will have already seen Colo, Trevi, Spanish steps the prior day. This is the start of 2 week trip--they will get their fill of art, museums, cathedrals, etc.--so, I am looking for something more active or hands on---but specific to the region (not just a playground, etc.). Also, it can't break the bank. Some things in other areas that we are doing include bike tour, cooking class, meal with regional dancers--so anything along those lines or any other great ideas? thanks, Elaine
How about:
A trip to see the Aqueducts - Ron in Rome has great itinerary information for this (http://www.travelforkids.com/Funtodo/Italy/rome.htm)
A trip to see one of the catacombs (http://web.tiscali.it/catacombe_priscilla/pagine-eng/regina.htm)
Rent bikes in Borghese Gardens
Also, here is a website with other activities to do with kids in Rome (http://www.travelforkids.com/Funtodo/Italy/romecity/borghesegardens.htm)
How about climbing to the top of the dome of St. Peter's? That, and a short visit to the inside of the Basilica to experience its utter hugeness would take 2-3 hours. There are marks in the floor of the Basilica (the largest church in the world) that show how big other large churches are in relation. If you are seeing other museums and churches around the country/continent it would be good to see this as a benchmark at the beginning of your trip.
I vote to take them to the catacombs, and I bet that's the first thing they tell their friends about!
Have a great trip.
Oooh, yah, Mimi has a great idea!
elaine,
Ostia Anica http://www.ostia-antica.org/indexes.htm is about 40 minutes from Rome.
How about going to a soccer match at the Olympic Stadium? Italian teams play on the weekends. Or check out open air markets like at Campo di Fiori. Or spend an afternoon having a picnic and renting bikes in the Borghese Gardens.
My teens didn't enjoy Ostic Antica too much, but we were in the rain. The catacombs may be a little too creepy too.
thanks to all--esp. for the link. The catacombs and/or bikes sounds great. Elaine
We are traveling with kids in June and are biking along the Appian Way. It is closed to traffic on Sunday and you can rent bikes along the way for less than 5 euros/bike.
