Extra Day in Rome or Florence?

Hello all! When planning my Italian trip for next summer I realized I have an extra day in the itinerary. I have narrowed it down to either another day in Rome (we will be spending 4 nights already) or Florence (we are already committed to 2 nights). I am an art lover, so I don't think I could go wrong either way, but I am curious which city do those of you who have been there wish you could have spent longer in? Thank you! Victoria

This is an easy one -- if you're already spending 4 nights in Rome, definitely spend another night in Florence! I usually spend 3 nights in Rome, then rent in Florence for a week,
return to Rome for one night then go home! There is just so much art in Florence to see -- and enjoying an evening after dark in the Piazza de la Senioria is a must! Enjoy!

You're right that you can't go wrong either way. There's no shortage of art in either city. That said, I would lean toward three nights in Florence.

Well my vote is Rome. I did 4 nights there and 3 in Florence in April. I felt like I saw a lot of Florence (museum and church wise), but didn't even begin to dent Rome. If it tells you anything I'm going back in May and doing 5 nights in Rome. I'm not doing Florence at all. Don't get me wrong, I loved Florence, but I feel like I saw what I needed to see. Best advice, make a day by day itinerary of the 2 cities and what you want to do. Add a "bonus" day to both. Then choose betweeen the bonus days. Whichever has the stuff you want to do more, that makes your decision.

Thank you everyone!
I made a quick list of things to do in the extra day and I think Florence wins, although it is primarily because I realized I will be spending one of the days there on a Monday when the Uffizi is closed that I need to add Tuesday to really get to appreciate it. Thanks again, Victoria

In Florence, I enjoyed the Bargello more than the Academia. The Medici Chapel is wonderful too. Wish I could have spent more time in? Rome and Florence. I spent a day at the Vatican museums and felt that I had sped through. Both are excellent choices.

Good for you for figuring out the Monday problem with Florence. Also, the Bargello is a really cool museum, but it has funny hours, closing for a very long lunch period each day, if I recall correctly. Have a great time.
