I have an extra travel day to spend in Italy. I have never visited Italy before. Should I spend an extra day in Assisi and take a day trip to Perugia? Or, should I spend an extra day in Siena and day trip to another town? (If so, where? We will be using buses and trains only.) I really don't want to pack up and overnight in an additional location. Also, we enjoy hiking and biking in beautiful spots. Our 9 year old will be with us. Some suggestions please! Molto Grazie! ---Barb
How many nights are you already planning to spend in Siena and Assisi? That makes a difference.
From the title I thought you were thinking of spending the extra day on a day trip to Nice (France). I would spend an extra day in Siena and visit some of the towns around it (San Gimignano, or Pienza or Monteriggioni). Renting a car for a day would be even more efficient. Perugia can be seen in a few hours. Go to the Corso, walk to the Duomo and you are done.
I have two nights for Siena and 2 nights for Assisi with an extra day that I can add to either. We are already going to Venice, Florence, and Rome on other days. We have enough time scheduled already for these places.
I vote for adding on night to Siena. use the extra day to visit the smaller villages in Central Tuscany. Make your choice here:
www.borghiditoscana.net. If you can arrange a rental car for 24 hrs, you'll be able to visit more places on that day. By bus it's possible, but you'll be limited to one or two places max.
