Extension cords

My husband and I will be traveling to Italy with Rick Steves tours in late august. We both use cpaps. Considering we both will need outlets for our cpaps ( which are dual voltage compatible so no need for converter) and iPhone chargers, I wondered if we should bring an extension cord - thinking some of the hotel rooms may not have many outlets. And if we should bring one, should we buy one that already has the EU plug, or bring one from home and just use an adapter on the cord?

First time traveling to Europe and trying to get ahead of the game. Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes. Buy one for sure. They are life savers because sometimes the closest available outlet is far from the bed, maybe on the opposite wall and the one near the bed is hard to reach behind the bed board.

I would also buy several small adapters because I lose at least one every year.
This is the extension cord I have, it’s 5ft long, but you can search on Amazon whatever you want there are plenty of types, also longer than 5ft if you want.

Below are other travel multi adapters my wife and I use.
This is for multiple countries. It works for UK, Europe, Australia, and Argentina (my wife has siblings in 3 continents so we have to be prepared).

hey hey J&T
roberto always has excellent ideas since he's from the florence area and our italian go to guy.
get two for both you and husband, and make sure the length is long. i have 2 5" long cords to be on safe side that helps where plug is on the wall. it's great to be prepared
have a great time and enjoy

I always pack an extension cord. Amazon has a good selection. My lime green extension cord has long been discontinued. Look for an elongated cord with both plugs slots and USB ports; it will fit between the suitcase rails. If you buy a cord with a US 2 prong plug it will fit into standard plug adapters. Choose a 5ft + long plug-in cord because sometimes the wall socket is behind furniture.

Slightly off topic suggestion, take a small power block and charging cord for your phone to carry during the day. You don’t want a dead phone battery. Anker and Mophie are good brands but the more power, the more weight. I have a couple Aqua Vault credit card size chargers that are extremely light and each will charge my phone about 1/3, enough to get me by.

Which tour are you taking? You will have a great time!

Hi J&T,

I just bought this unit on Amazon yesterday for $9.99. It has an italian plug-in and then multiplies for 8 US outlets. It also has usb-a and usb-c ports for phone/tablets. My wife and I have been to Italy many times and, yes, usable outlets can be limited and not always in convenient locations. I also use a cpap and realize the importance of an outlet or outlets close to the bed. In addition, I bring a few single adapters ( some 2 prong and some 3 prong italian plug-ins ). It never hurts to have options when you are almost 6,000 miles from home.

Italy Travel Plug Adapter, Olcorife US to Italy Type L Plug Adapter, International Power Strip with 8 Outlets and 4 USB(1 USB-C), 5 FT Cord for Italy Chile Ethiopia Libya https://a.co/d/0f9GCJ7Z

Feel free to message if you have any questions.

Safe and happy travels,

Mark

If you are interested in using a multiple input travel adapter like the one Roberto links to, Epicka has a new smaller, lighter one that I just started using:

Thank you to all the responses! Your information is valuable to make our first trip go a little smoother. We are doing the 17 day trip end of August( adding 4 days at the end in sorrento). I’m sure we will have more questions and are very thankful for the input. Again thank you; we will for sure be bringing an extension cord after reading your valuable comments!

hey hey J&T
you're welcome for all these answers posted. the forum always willing to give you good bad and ugly. don't know what cities you are on with tour, i'm sure you will have some free time along they way.
after doing some research of course come back to ask so you will be prepared, people, places and things to see & do. seen too many travelers not prepared or searching and were unhappy. they may give you option and then you decide what excites you after what the tour does.
pack light, it will be HOT in august, some people have found a laundermat in town (washer/dryer, carry small coins, we took small container of detergent, dryer sheet) near cafe, had lunch/drink & people watched and soon it was done. crowds during daytime with daytrippers, evenings they have gone and enjoy roaming the streets/markets, never know if things happening in the towns. your guide will inform you when you ask.

my first trip was years ago to rome 6 nights, then a 17 day transatlantic cruise to florida. i was determined to ride the "fast train" anywhere, friend says no time, i'm a big girl with big girl pantaloons & will go by myself!! she agreed and we went to naples, one of best day trips even though gritty, garbage everywhere, italian cops/guards with uzis, guns, armoured tanks. was a riot and we laughed so much, stopped for cocktails by bay and train back. i'm from big island hawaii in a small plantation town on hamakua coast with 4,000 people, talk about something totally different for me. have been back a few times to other big cities and different countries, you are gonna get the bug and wanna travel again. LOL
my paternal family grew up south of st louis in cape girardeau along the river, and friend living north north outside alton illinois
enjoy yourselves and have a great time

I just bring a regular light duty 5-6' extension cord and plug it into an adaptor block like the one Roberto mentioned above. I've never needed anything longer and when I've brought longer cords, I regret the space they take up. You don't need a heavy cord because your CPAP isn't drawing more than maybe 4 amps regardless of whether it's plugged into a wall in Rome or Chicago.

I will put in a plug for getting a travel CPAP. Mine is about the size of a softball and works great

I will echo Chris.
I also have a light weight 6ft extension cord like the one below. I use it in the U.S., Mexico, or any other country that uses the type A plugs. And with one small adapter, would work in Italy too.
