My husband and I will be departing Florence on April 26 in a rental car and will have 2 days to explore Tuscany. We are staying outside of Siena at Castel Monastero. Can anyone help us map out a route with some good stops along the way? And any recommendations for wineries to visit? Thanks!
val, One question since you're planning on using a rental car and especially since you're starting in Florence. Are you aware of the usual "issues" regarding driving in Italy? If not post another note for further information. Regarding route planning, I'd suggest a good Map (Michelin?) along with a GPS unit. Happy travels!
Yes, thanks, we are good with driving in Italy. Just wondered if there were popular routes for a day drive or some "don't miss" stops in that area. We would also love some advice on which wineries to stop at - not so interested in touring the winery, just tasting and maybe picnicing. Thanks!
South of Siena , the hilly area known as the "Sienese Crest" is full of colorful fields and curvey scenic roads. The area and roads with route numbers are described in Rick Steves Italy book under hill towns of central Italy:" more sights in Tuscany. " My wife and I took #438 on road maps to Montalcino from Siena. The panaramas are beautiful with many areas to pull off for photo ops and/or picnics. Very little traffic, much less than the LIE! We did not visit a winery but strolled around Montalcino with many places to buy wine and restaurants to enjoy. A GPS is helpful.
