I'm trying to figure out whether this would be a feasible day trip: take 162 bus from Verona Porta Palio to Malcesine - ferry to Sirmione (I realize it would run long, but seems like a nice way to see the lake), and then a bus from Sirmione back to Verona. The online ferry schedules are confusing to me - can't tell how many companies there are, so it's hard to compare schedules. Any insights would be appreciated.
ln,
Taking a Bus from Verona to Malcesine should work fine. However, I'd suggest taking the Ferry from Malcesine to Peschiera, as you'll have access to rail service there. Sirmione only has access by Bus and Taxi, and since your day is already going to be a long one, going to Sirmione would make it even longer. You could perhaps stop for dinner in Peschiera before heading back to Verona (there are some nice restaurants close to the boat dock). The walk from the dock area to the station is only about 15 minutes (I timed it).
Thanks, Ken - that makes a lot of sense. I'll just gaze at Sirmione from afar, and get back to Verona at a decent hour.
ln,
Don't be too concerned about having to "gaze at Sirminone from afar". I wasn't overly impressed with it and could hardly wait to get out of there.
Ah. And how did you feel about Malcesine?
ln,
I only stopped briefly at Malcesine while on the way to Limone on the Ferry. It looks like an interesting and scenic town, and I'm planning to make a return visit to that area to explore it further. As photography is an important part of my trips, I image the views are spectacular from the cable car going up the mountain.
My trip for this year is now "locked in stone" so my return to Malcesine will have to be next year. I'll probably take the Ferry up from Peschiera, rather than using the Bus. If I can connect with the Aliscafo (Hydrofoil), it will be a quick trip.
Ooh - thanks for the lovely pic!
