We're staying in Verona and plan to take the train to Lake Garda. I see there is a train to Desenzano Del Garda-Sirmione (a 17 minute ride!). Are there ferries leaving there that go to some good sight seeing locations? Any suggestions? It would have to be a round trip as we need to make our way back to Verona.
Bryan,
If you're planning to use the ferries, I'd suggest travel by train to Peschiera del Garda as it has good access to the boats. The walk from the station to the boat dock is about 15 minutes as I recall, or you can take a taxi which shouldn't be too expensive. Given the time it takes to travel up & down the lake, you should be able to have a quick look at Malcesine and perhaps Limone sul Garda. At the end of your trip, simply make your way back to the station at Peschiera and take the train back to Verona. As those trains are usually Regionale, DON'T forget to validate your tickets prior to boarding the train.
The rail trip from Verona Porta Nuova to Peschiera is only about 14 minutes, so it's an easy trip.
Here's a link for the Lago di Garda Ferries - http://www.navlaghi.it/ .
When we went from Verona to Garda we took a bus there and back for the scenery. It takes about an hour each way, but also goes up to Garda itself on the east side of the Lake and you can hike back along the hills down to Bardolino and catch the bus going back.
Try this for some more information: http://www.visitgarda.com/en/garda_lake/ and look at the "Getting There" tab.
Thank you for the great ideas!
Bryan
We have three options for ferry “tours” with Prescheria as a beginning and end
With the following cities being visited:
1) Simone and Salo
2) Gardone and Bardolino
3) Riva (up the east side and down the west.
Suggestions?
Thx!
Saló is a lovely town with a long waterfront walkway. Nice shops, upscale feel to the town. We stayed overnight, did not see any other Americans, mostly Germans and from other Northern European countries. An Italian friend recommended it to us on our way up to the Dolomites. On our return from Dolomites, we stayed in Malcesine, dramatic mountain views, more “touristy.”
