Exploring greater Tuscany by car or by car/train?

My wife and I are planning a three week trip to Italy. Starting in Rome and then Florence (3 days in each). We want to explore greater Tuscany, as far south as Orvieto and north to the Cinque Terre. Should we rent a car in Rome and explore going north, or train to Florence and then rent a car? And if we are going to explore Cinque Terre do we separate in two trips, car for Tuscany, train to Cinque Terre? Thanks.

Having a car in the CT (in Liguria) is not necessary and mostly inconvenient. Since Orvieto (in Umbria) is on your visit list, you might want to take the train from Rome to Orvieto. Stay at least overnight to sight see and the rent the car on departure. Northern and southern Tuscany are different and since you have the time you might want to divide your base into two stays. Staying someplace in the Val d'Orcia for the south and perhaps near Lucca or in Chianti for the north. Drop the car before you get to Florence or travel to the CT. That could be done at Pisa or Lucca or even La Spezia.

Great suggestions, thank you! I suppose if one is going to be dropping off at a different city, there are choices beyond the major cities. I'm on the Auto Europe site as I write this and will check out the options. Thanks again.
