Exploring Cinque Terra by Ferry

We are traveling in Italy in May/June 2015 and thinking of staying in Pisa for 3-4 nights. One of the days we want to visit Cinque Terre and wondered about this plan.

  • Take the train to La Spezia and board the ferry that goes to four of the five towns.
  • Stop and explore one or more of the towns.
  • Return to La Spezia to catch the train back to Pisa.

So, is it possible to hop off/hop on the ferries throughout the day?
and
How does one get from the train station in LaSpezia to the ferry dock?
Other suggestions from experts?? Note: We are seniors who love to travel by train throughout Europe - so trains are no problem for us.

The ferries are designed for hopping on and off and will sell you an all-day ticket for that purpose. Schedules are not online currently, but that page also has a link for a map to the dock in La Spezia. It's also shown on Google maps, when you zoom in close to the western end of Viale Italia, about a 20-minute walk from La Spezia Centrale station.

On your way back to Pisa, I assume you'll catch a train at whatever town you're at, not return by ferry. Ferries don't run very late.

carolyn,

In the same situation, I'd probably take the short train ride (about nine minutes) from La Spezia to Riomaggiore (the first Cinque Terre town) and connect with the Ferry there as the dock is more easily accessible from the train station (an easy five minutes or so). You could perhaps spend a short time exploring Riomaggiore before boarding the Ferry.

To reach the dock in Riomaggiore, you'll need to get to the plaza in front of the rail station (your train may arrive on the outside track, which means you'll have to use the tunnel to get to the plaza). Then walk through the short tunnel that parallels the tracks and to the main street. Instead of turning left to go up the main street, continue straight and down the stairs. Keep to the left and take the path that goes around the cliff. You'll pass a ticket booth where you can buy your boat ticket. Just past the ticket booth, you'll see the stairs leading down to the area where the boats dock.

One point to note is that the boats don't stop in Corniglia. If you want to visit there, you'll have to use the local trains. As Corniglia is built on top of a bluff, there are numerous stairs to reach the town. However, there is a shuttle from the station (for a small charge). One other point to note is that if you want to hike / walk any of the Sentiero Azzurro trails including the famous Via dell' Amore (Riomaggiore to Manarola), a Park Pass will be required.

You could start in Riomaggiore and finish in Monterosso at about supper time, as there are lots of nice restaurants there. After a fine hot meal, return to Pisa by train.

First, I would suggest reconsidering staying in Pisa. I think it is one of the most tacky and unattractive towns in all of Europe. You have been warned. A much better choice would be Lucca, for example. If you want to see the leaning tower, it is an easy, short train ride from Lucca as an afternoon trip.

Next, when planning your trip to Cinque Terre, you need to take a train again at La Spezia to one of the 4 towns served by ferry. We to the train to Monterosso, explored a bit, and then got on the ferry to the next town, so and so forth, making our way to Manarola where we took the train back to La Spezia. To get from La Spezia to the ferry dock is an unnecessary waste of time.

You probably idon'thave the time, but the ferry into Portovenere is just spectacular. I love the approach, is is just so, so, medieval as you pass the church on the promontory

A warning about the ferries. We visited Cinque Terra for one day hoping to get around by ferry but were unable to because of the weather conditions The ferries were not operating that day because of rough waters. We got around instead by train. Keep your plans flexible if you hope to see the region by ferry rather than train or accept that you might be using the trains rather than the boats.
