Is it a better idea to use a private driver to explore Positano, Amalfi and Ravelo or use ferries out of Sorrento on my own?
I think that depends on the time of year. Ravello isn't on the water, so you'd need to take a bus or taxi from Amalfi if travelling by ferry. In summer, road traffic can be horrendous. In the off season ferries would be scarce to nonexistent.
Knowing time of year is important
We used a combination of private driver, bus and ferry and Circumvesuviana while in the region
Mondo Guides offers an affordable all day tour if the AC towns that might interest you

We did their Capri and Pompeii tours and loved both
We are going September 23rd. Is that off season? Is that a time where there is traffic?
Btw, I’m new to this site. How do I respond specifically to a person (where their name shows in blue)? Sorry for the tech ignorance
You might want to share how many days you have--are you going to try to see all in one day? etc. If you have time, I'd give Positano one day (it won't take all day, however much you'd like depending on ferry schedules), then on another day I might come to Amalfi and take the bus up to Ravello and back, then spend the remainder of the day in Amalfi.
It should still be fairly lively in late September. If you decide to splash out for a driver, I'd visit one or two and still come another day for the ferry ride--to see the coast from the sea.
ETA you cannot respond directly (though you can send private messages), you just have to cut and paste.
We used a private driver from our hotel in Sorrento due to having limited time in the area. He drove us in an air conditioned Mercedes SUV to Positano, Amalfi and Ravelo with lunch in Ravelo at the most gorgeous restaurant with amazing views and great food. It was two couples and ran us around 400€ for the day, which we felt was reasonable. We only had about 2 hours in each place, which was a nice "taste" of each town with a desire to go back to Positano and Amalfi on our own. You can defiantly do it on your own but that would require more time in the area, but the journey to these places is 1/2 the fun of it all.
We will be there 3 days. Thanks for the tips!
Debra-
Is it 3 days or 3 nights?
IOW are these 3 full days which would be 4 nights?
Do you plan to visit Pompeii and/or Capri as well?
Each of those needs a full day or at least most of day with time that evening to enjoy Sorrento
The AC Coast needs a full day as well
September 23 is still very much in season and will still be crowded ( not as crowded as June/July/August but still busy for sure)
Letizia, How did you find your driver? Who did you use? I am planning to stay in Positano but would like to try the driver for the day.
Thanks!
