Is it worth getting tickets for the excavations below St. Peter's Basilica? I heard new things are being discovered there. Hope you can help....Shelly
We will be doing the Scavi tour in 2 weeks......will let you know!
Can you tell me what the Scavi Tours are? Sounds interesting....Shelly
What you referred to above - it is a Vatican sponsored tour of the necropolis under St Peters Basilica, and tickets must be requested well in advance: http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/institutions_connected/uffscavi/documents/rc_ic_uffscavi_doc_gen-information_20040112_en.html
Mindy - Thank you very much...exactly what i needed...enjoy your Scavi Tour...i hope it is all you wish it to be....Shelly
Shelly[INVALID]It is well worth trying to get reservations for this. It was really the highlight of our trip to Rome as we had seen many of the sights before, and also this is something that not "everyone" does. It is quite humid and "close" down there but I never felt claustrophobic. Seeing the actual ground below St. Peter's and also the pagan necropolis is really something, not to mention seeing the bones of St. Peter (at least they THINK they are.) I would highly recommend this. Make reservations NOW. We did not hear back from them until 2 weeks before our trip, so don't lose hope if you don't hear right away.
We thought it was worth it when we did the tour in 2006. Only so many people can do that tour per day so it can be hard to get the reservation. There is an age restriction, I think 15, that people should be aware of if they are in a family group.
