Ex-Roman traveling to Rome again

I lived in Rome for six months four years ago, and loved every minute of it. However, I was there from January until June.

My retired father has flown to his native Italy to spend the month of August in his hometown, two hours south of Rome. I decided to join him. I'm only going to be in Italy for a week and a half, but I decided to spend 2 1/2 days to myself to re-visit Rome this August.

I know it will be hot, etc. However, (pay attention, those who recently just came back from Rome) are there any special things going on in Rome next week? Festivals, art shows, concerts, etc?

And I know this sounds rather dumb, but how to do you folks keep yourself occupied if traveling by yourself? The last time I did that, I ended up reading and relaxing inside too much.

Nothing specific for you, but August traditionally is pretty dead in Rome. Many leave the city for holiday and to escape the heat. Some restaurants or businesses may be closed, and I doubt that there are any major events planned (though Paris does hold some events during the summer holidays especially for those not leaving, maybe Rome does as well) Of course all of the tourist areas will be open as well as many restaurants and businesses to serve them, so it is not like the city shuts down.

Yea, I'm aware that many things shut down in Italy in August. However, thus is the reason why I am asking f there might be other things going on, apart from the main attractions.
