Evening Options in Florence

Hello,

My sister and I will be in Florence for 2 nights in early June, and I'm trying to plan out our time there - but it seems like all of the major sights close by 6:30, so I'm trying to figure out what our options are for the evenings. Right now I'm planning on just long dinners and walking around the city, but I was curious if you guys knew of any museums or other things that are open in Florence past 7, or if just leaving those evenings open for wandering is the better idea.

I'd also love any thoughts on our potential itinerary:

Day 1: arrive and settle in in morning, quick lunch before free Medici Tour with Florence Free Tours, Uffizi Gallery in late afternoon, then walk around Ponte Vecchio until dinnertime

Day 2: Accademia in early morning, then lunch before heading out to our pre-booked wine tour for the afternoon, then hang out around Piazzele Michelangelo and get dinner

Day 3: climb Duomo or Bell Tower, then potentially see Bargello Museum before leaving for 4:30 flight

Thanks for sharing any thoughts or ideas you have!

Florence is an open air museum. There will be plenty of beautiful art and architecture to see just by walking the streets and the piazze. There are also concerts taking place, in churches and in the open (check local events when you are there). Also eating out, sitting out at sidewalk cafes, having a gelato, taking a stroll, watching street performers, will keep you busy till late at night. I've never heard of people running out of things to do in Florence after museums close. It's like saying that you wouldn't know what to do in NYC after museums close.

What Roberto said...

A couple things I found positively breathtaking on a Florence evening were walking up to the Cathedral di Santa Maria del Fiore next to the Duomo and closely inspecting the outside, the detail of the facade, without the crowds. Just fantastic. Then, after stopping for a gelato, walking by the Uffizi Gallery on that long, narrow walkway, sitting on some steps and listening to a street performer playing the flute. The acoustics were incredible. This was on my first trip to Florence and I immediately thought, it was for this that I have come.

Can't beat that.

What Roberto said. We were in Florence for 3 days over the May Day holiday and did not go into one museum (earlier trip in 2012, and we saw quite a few then!) Lots of walking and gazing at buildings.

You could go watch the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo, or San Miniato al Monte, or both.

Review City Tours Florence website for their night tour. I've not taken it but reviews seem positive. There will be free concerts in the churches as another poster noted and I believe June has free jazz concerts as well. Merely walking along the Arno as the buildings light up is lovely. Oh atop the LaRinacente (sp.) department store is Cafe Terrazzo which has nearly 360 views of Florence. Quite lovely at night. Don't remember the food but do recall the views. Enjoy your 48 hours.

The last time I went to Florence, I was there for 5 days and didn't set foot in a museum. I was utterly amused the entire time.

That's great to hear - I had a feeling that just walking around the city would be enough, just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything else important I was missing out on. Thanks for your feedback everyone!
