I am traveling to France in a week. I have read all the info about euros here or there, in Italy. What about France? What is the advantage of purchasing there instead of gettng them ahead of time?
Good one, Nigel. Yep, that's the main idea behind a unified currency. It's one currency therefore one exchange rate, regardless of what country you're in.

Saving money?
I always like to have some ahead of time. That way, when I get off the plane, I have euros to get to my hotel without having to look for an ATM at the airport and then waiting in line to use it. The ATM's I used there limited withdrawals to 250 euros/day and charged over 6 euros for each transaction, so I'm not sure you save all that much. One thing I did that saved money was get a credit card that does not charge foreign transaction fees and put everything I could on it.
Everything you read about Italy, substitute the word "France".
Be sure to notify your credit card provider and your ATM card provider when and where you will be in Europe. If you don't, some computer may block your card for suspected fraudulent activity. Read this helpful article by Rick Steves.
