European 3 Day Stopover on Way to Venice

We're traveling to Venice in May 2023 from the California Bay Area. We would like to stop over somewhere in Europe to help adjust to jet lag and see some sites. Any suggestions? We're thinking of a city with direct flights to Venice, but we could take a train instead. Our dates are flexible. Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!

How about another place in Italy? Would be easy to get a flight to Rome or Milano from pretty much anywhere. You could fly into Milan and spend a few days relaxing by Lake Como

Hello wrenfether,

I guess the question is "What city are you interested in seeing?"

I'd agree that your direct flight options are the best so the biggest ones on the list seem to be London and Paris. You can fly in directly - although both International airports are well outside the city - but either is a great place to see and explore for a couple of days. I'd personally choose Paris but that's just a personal preference.

The flight is 4-5 hours from either city so they are pretty much the same. I would also check which carriers service Venice since your Europe internal choices may be smaller airlines with different options and may use different airports than the international one for departure.

The train is not really an option unless you're willing to make a connecting flight into Milan or Rome but if that's the case I'd just fly directly to Venice in the first place.

Hope that helps, have a great trip,

I would say that Venice is a better choice to get over jet lag than a large city. The suggestion to fly to Milan and proceed to Lake Como is a good one. You could take the train to Varenna, then take the train to Venice when you are ready to change locations. That would avoid a flight within Europe as well.

Thank you all for the suggestions! Milan sounds especially intriguing and we hadn't considered it. We'll check it out. :)
