Europe SIM card usage

I have just learned that I will need to purchase a local sim card upon arrival in Rome to ensure that I have data when not in WIFI range. If I purchase a one month plan, Will the sim work in other european countries, Germany, Switzerland and France? Can a physical SIM card (not E sim) be purchased in the airport and will the instructions on the phone then be in italian ? I have an old iphone 7+ and I am from the Caribbean and if I use my local provider, and roam while in Europe it will be astronomical. Help!

if you have an 'unlocked' phone with a physical sim you can purchase a card anywhere in italy. i suggest going to a company store rather than a generic 'phone' store. i am happy with vodaphone when i travel. i have also used tim. vodaphone sims definitely work in multiple eu countries no matter where it was purchased. don't know where in the airport you buy a card but i am sure there are stores. the instructions will most likely be in Italian, as will the app if you download it. the salespeople take care of the switch and activation. i am on android so don't know much about ios. good practice is to write down the phone number in case you forget!
