Europcar / Hertz, Lucca or Pisa (airport)

Hi Gang. Looking for an opinion. In October after we have stayed at Cinque Terre, we are going to take the train and head to Tuscany. We want to rent a car probably in either Lucca (which is the first town that we want to visit and never have been there before) or Pisa (which we are not going to visit since we have been there before). In Lucca we would either walk or take a taxi from the train station to the car rental (either rental company seems to be within a few kilometers from the train station). In Pisa, we can just take the train (and I think we would need to use the Pisa Mover) to the airport car rental. Looking at rental costs, they are both pretty close. So I think the decision boils down to convenience and maybe car availability (thinking that Pisa airport would have more than Lucca town central).

Anyone have thoughts or opinions.

We have been to Tuscany before though it was 20 years ago.

Thanks,
Don

Pick whichever is convenient. Where do you head after you get the car--and where do you depart? It is not clear if you are staying in Lucca or just passing through.

A bit of clarity. We are just visiting Lucca that afternoon before we are heading to Volterra for our overnight.

Yes but where do you need to drop the car--if flying out of Pisa then I would probably get it there (there could be a minor fee with a different location dropoff)

We will drop off at Rome Fiumicono Airport since we will be flying out the next morning, and we have been to Rome before so not planning on visiting it this trip. I'm not concerned about drop off or driving to the airport from Tuscany.

Since it is not a loop, then I don't think it matters either way--was just looking for any reason to pick one over the other. Lucca is probably easier if you can get the car you want there.

You won’t want or need car in Lucca unless you have day trips planned
You’ll need parking as well

Could pick up in LaSpezia-better availability than Lucca
The agencies in Lucca are very small

Also take into consideration of luggage storage, you don't want to leave luggage in the car while touring Lucca. We did CT in June, took train to Pisa, stored luggage at Pisa train station while touring Pisa, then taxi to Pisa airport to pick up rental. People Mover is 6.5 pp I think, and car rental is away from the airport. We took taxi (13e) directly to rental agency.
