Eurail vs point to point

Which is more economical in Italy ; Eurail or point to point? We're flying into Genoa, traveling to Cinque Terre; probably by boat. From Genoa to Florence, Florence to Naples / Pompei. Naples to Pula Croatia . From there to Trieste.

Way cheaper to do it point-to-point, even last minute, but do yourself a favor and save even more by getting advance purchase tickets for the Florence-Naples and Naples-Venice legs. Ferry Venice to Pula.

We expect to take the train Naples to Pula, or a combination of train , ferry. Naples> Trieste> Pula? Trying to piece it all together. Our trip is planned for after Sept 20.

How far in advance do you suggest purchasing the Florence-Naples and the Naples- Venice legs? how about the ferry? Easy enough to do day of or day before? By the time we get to this part of our trip it will be late Sept.

We just spent a month in Italy with only one train reserved from home (Orvieto>Naples), the rest regionale trains bought day-of-travel. Prior trips I reserved Rome>Florence and Florence>Venice ahead of travel to get the best fares. Pass seems to be an expensive way to go.

To see how much you can save by buying the long-distance train tickets soon, go to the railitalia website and price those trips for tomorrow and for as late a date as the website will accept. But only buy once you're sure of your schedule, because those bargain tickets are non-refundable and non-changeable.

You'll need tomuse Italian station names: Firenze S M Novella and Napoli Centrale.

Naples to Pula is a LONG trip by train and ferry, taking the better part of a day. If your plan is to take a ferry from Venice, the Venezia Lines catamaran is probably your best option. However, their schedule starts to wind down in September and ends in October. You won't be able to go directly to Pula after mid-September, but there are catamarans to Rovinj through the first week of October. You could then take the half hour bus ride to Pula. Catamarans leave Venice late afternoon (around 5:00 PM) but don't necessarily depart every day of the week. It would be wise to first purchase your catamaran tickets online and then plan your Naples-Venice train trip to coincide. If you buy the train tickets first, you may or may not arrive in Venice on a day there's a catamaran to Croatia.
