Eurail Pass

On previous trips to Italy we have purchased tickets for individual train trips at a travel agent or at the train station in Italy just prior to the travel segment. This time we are considering buying a Eurail pass. How do we book our trips? Are the segments still booked through a travel agent or at the train station? We are buying a 1st class pass. Will all seats require seat reservations? Can we book all four segments before we leave Canada? Is the Rail Protection Plan a wise purchase?

First, you can continue your practice of buying the reservation at a ticket office prior to departure. All trains in Italy except the Regional trains require a seat reservation. The premium fare varies by level of train service. If you are only doing four segments you will not save any money using a pass. In additional there are deep discounts available if you are willing to commit to a fixed schedule prior to your arrival. Have no idea what the Rail Protection Plan is.

Thank you, Frank. Each of our four segments are day long trips. Is it still less to purchase individual ones? If we were committing to a firm schedule prior to leaving home, who would I book this with? I gather that this would be done without buying the pass. Do you know anything about the discount of purchasing a Eurorail pass that includes car rental - is this a good buy?

Hi Anne. Use trenitalia.com to research / buy tickets. If your travel dates are more than 90 days out, use similar dates 60 or so days out to get the idea. The 'base' fare is the regular fare you would pay if you buy at last minute in Italy. The 'mini' fare (varies by train) is the discount fare you will pay today if you are willing to lock in an exact date and time and buy online. Most folks don't think first class is worth the extra $ but of course that is a matter of personal preference. Enjoy your trip!
