EU Rail Regional Pass (2 country)

On their website it looks like we can purchase a regional pass for two countries = Italy & Switzerland. (2 continents - five days & 2nd class). I have purchased 2nd class train tickets while in Italy before & have done so the day of/or the day before travel, so I am familiar with the rail system but have never purchased one of these. I may or may not have paid more by purchasing them at the last minute but they seemed reasonable. There are so many different types of fares! A few questions about doing this:

I understand if we purchase this pass, we will still need to make reservations for our seats on each individual train trip. Correct?

Also, if we decide to upgrade one leg of the trip to 1st class (probably the route from Switzerland to Italy) can we do so without being charged a great deal? Is that possible? Can you do that right before boarding? What about switching to a high speed train...additional fees?

I have crunched the numbers and it looks like the individual fares are fairly close to the cost of the pass. Would it be easier to just to forget the pass & purchase the five individual tickets each time? Any benefits to purchasing the pass instead?

Many thanks for your help.

What is your itinerary? Also what site are you using to compare fares?

There is no 2-country Eurail pass for Italy and Switzerland. They do each have their own, separate passes, available in either 1st or 2nd class. Depending on how far you'll travel, some type of Swiss Pass is likely to be a good value, covering a lot of local transport in addition to trains. Trains within Switzerland don't typically require reservations, except for a few named routes like the Glacier Express.

The Italy Pass only saves money if you have at least three long train rides - long means Venice to Rome, not Venice to Florence in one day. The faster Italian trains and the international trains to/from Switzerland do require seat reservations for about $15 per person in addition to the pass.

The price to upgrade a train ride is the price difference between a 2nd and 1st class ticket - or about 50% of the 2nd class ticket price. If you have just a Swiss Pass, which covers you to the border, you can buy a reserved Italian train ticket that starts at the border, sold in any train station.

Thank you for your info. Seems like I should just stick to what I know and buy tickets as needed / skipping a pass of some kind.

Flight arrives in Zurich & will immediately take train to Lake Como. Will be in Italy for 15 days ( five being travel days). Italy train travel = Lake Como - Venice (thru Milan) - Florence - Naples - depart Rome.

Saw conflicting info. on different sites = one site showed a two country "regional" pass but the other one didn't...so I wondered.
(think there is definitely a four country pass though)

Forgo the pass. Buy any high speed train tickets ahead of time for savings (if you know what date/time you may want to travel) and buy any regional train tickets when you are in italy.
