I would like to spend about a week touring some of the Etruscan sites in Italy. We prefer not to drive so wonder if there is a good itinerary that goes by train and is then accessible by walking or it there is a good tour available?
If you google "Etruscan tours Italy" you will find a few results, including tripadvisor recommendations. Sorry that I can't give a more personalized answer.
Mary,
In order to determine the best transportation options, the first step will be to determine which sites you want to visit. Frommer's has some locations listed, and you may be able to cover those shown on their website within a week. I don't know of any tours, so would have to do some research on the subject.
Good luck!
If you're planning to be in Tuscany, you should add the town of Volterra to your itinerary as it has an interesting Etruscan museum. You can read about it in Rick's 'Tuscany' book. I wish we'd had more time to spend in the museum but unfortunately we were in a hurry. I believe there are two or three floors worth of Etruscan artifacts.

I'll stop here.
The Archeological Museum (Museo Archeologico) in Florence is currently hosting a special exhibition titled “Dawn of the Etruscan Princes” (ends July 31st, 2014):

Orvieto is easily reached by train and has tunnels under the city that date back to the Etruscans.
I'm glad Brad mentioned Orvieto. We did the underground tour that he is referring to and it was really fascinating (you can book it when you get there); my husband & I really enjoyed it. Have a great trip!
