Entry to Roman Forum from Palatine Hill

Hi,

I wonder where is the entrance to Roman Forum from Palatine Hill? Is it near the Farnese Garden?
Could we enter it directly from Via Sacra passing Arc of Titus?

I have the combination Colosseum, Palatine and Roman Forum ticket and plan to start from Colosseum, Palatine then finished at Roman Forum.

TIA

There is an internal walkway from the palatine hill to the forum. You must use this walkway to get from one to the other. You can go in either direction. There are signs inside detailing the walkway. If you visit one and leave it you will not be permitted to return to the other. They are considered a single site because of the internal walkway. Once inside see them both or you'll need to buy another ticket.

Hi Donna,

do you happen to remember near which site of the Palatine Hill the internal walkway to the Roman Forum? I'm just concern i take the wrong walkway which might be the exit

You can't mistake the path that connects the two from an exit.

You need a vivid imagination to appreciate the Forum and Palatine Hill, they are in poor condition, i.e. rubblesque.

Consider visiting the Colosseum another day, just to spread out all the walking.

You'll know when you come to an exit, there is no mistaking it. Just follow the signs.

The Palatino entrance on Via di San Gregorio is usually much less crowded. When finished with Palatine Hill, walk down the path to Arch of Titus and continue downhill to the left (west) to the Imperial Forum, and you never leave the site.

Hi All,

thanks for the input

sorry a bit of change since apparently I just find out Via Sacra is an exit only gate (the nearest to the Colosseum which I'd take to get to my next venue). thus, i would like to leave arch of titus as the end on the exit way to Via Sacra. Is there any other entrance i could use?

As Jeff said above, use the entrance to the Palatine on Via di San Gregorio. Once in, just follow the signs, as Donna instructed.

Hi Kathy,

I mean the entrance from the Palatine to Roman Forum. Jeff gave good advice but then i find out that via sacra is an exit only so i want to make arc of titus the end of my route otw to via sacra exit

Hi Jen - in 2012, we visited the Colosseum one day and the Palatime Hill/Forum on a separate day, as suggested above. All 3 sights are huge, and if you poke around every nook and cranny, it will take lots of walking (both on the level, and up and down) and will require a good deal of time and energy.

For the Palatine Hill, we used the Via San Gregorio entrance, as Jeff and Kathy mentioned, and climbed up from there. After exploring (we didn't go inside the museum at the top), we worked our way downhill. There's a network of paths and walkways (some with steps), so you may wind you way downhill, or take the "straightest" route. Some of the paths have excellent views overlooking the forum. At the bottom, near the Arch of Titus, we hung a left into the Forum and the Via Sacra. At the far end, near the Arch of Septimius Severus and the Curia building, there's an exit-only gate that leads to stairs up to the Piazza del Campidoglio and the Capitoline Museum. To exit near the Arch of Titus, you have to backtrack up the Via Sacra towards that arch.

Just follow the signs. Really. This site handles millions of tourists every year so they're pretty good at shepherding people the directions they should go.

Uh, pun intended, Kathy? ;-)

If you enter at Via san gregorio entrance you can use the walkway to the forum. It's very easy. Just follow the signs.

Kathy, you made me smile with the shepherding comments.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Hi All,

i don't have 2 days for the site. next day would be the 25th Dec. that's why at least more or less i need to know the area and i need to get out in the direction of the Colosseum again not the other side. since i also think it's all rubbles so it'd be quite hard to get familiar w/ the track once we got 'lost'. hopefully the sign is good and in place where i need them if ..i got lost :D

Happy Thanksgiving y'all :D

Don't worry about what side you come out on. Whatever it is, it'll still be in the relative area of the colosseum.

Jenn, you're worrying over nothing. It's not that big of an area. No matter where you come out the colosseum will be within a 5 minute walk. Take a look at google earth to see the area.

Donna is spot on.The area is just not that large. Central Rome in general is not huge.

The Foro Romano is an area lower than street level, you can see the main street from it, and there is a main path that you can stray from and still end up back on it (the side paths join up with it at several points). If you get lost, just backtrack until you get to that main path.

Hi Zoe,

If you absolutely have to do all the sites on one day, I'd start with the Colosseum since it is rather intact and there's a lot to admire still standing, so see it fresh when you are not staggering from exhaustion. Then I would suggest you go up to Palatine Hill, then work down to the forum, then work your way up the via sacre to the Victor Emmanuel Monument end and exit there (assuming it is closer to your hotel which is likely). There are exits (no entry) at the VE end and then one (or two?) on the north side.

Hi Tom_MN
thanks for the info. Yes , I've booked for 9.40am Colosseum underground tour. but after the palatine and roman , i plan to visit st John at Lateran. that's why i plan to get out from via sacra if possible. i'd save the piazza visits for the 25th as the churches are closed on that day.
