I'm having a heck of a time trying to find out what documents I need to travel to Rome in May with my 16 yr old granddaughter. She has a passport and will have a notorized letter from her mother for permission and relationship. I have tried to reach the Italian consulate to see if there is anything else I need but I get no response by phone or email. Is there anyone who can direct me to a source or tell me your recent experience? I don't want to get there and have trouble with the authorities.
Thanks
Besides the notarized letter giving you permission to travel with your granddaughter, also have your daughter sign a letter giving you permission to make medical decisions should that need arise.
Chances are, in Europe, considering her age, you won't be asked. But it's better to be safe than sorry.
I've been through the webpages for the Italian embasies in Wash DC, LA, & San Fran. There is nothing specific. I've emailed DC, LA & SF to request info but, no reply. I've phoned all three, can't get a person. Whoa.
If I had to know, I would search the Italian government webpage (Embassy or Consulate) for requirements.
There is a "Children's Issues" section on this page:

From our experience the parents' letter authorizing travel and passport is adequate. But it has to be from both of them even if separated. The biggest hurdle will be the airport checkin in the US. They are the ones who look hard at the documents Italian immigrations will not look twice at her.
I escorted my 2 granddaughters (ages 10,7)in 2007 with a notorized letter from their mother (my daughter) and I was taking them to their father in England. USA didn't bother looking at or asking for paperwork. At immigration in London the woman questioned me about who was taking care of them while their father worked. Even assured they would by on an air base with an armed guard stationed outside the day care center didn't seem to make her feel any easier about what the kids would be doing while he worked but she didn't question my having the children in my possession whatsoever. Rather strange. At the age of 16 I doubt there will be much of a problem. Have a great time. Pam
Thank you all. My dtr (mother to gdtr) is divorced and has sole custody of her. Her father is in Iraq. Any comments? Carol
