Enough Time for Sorrento?

We are leaving for Italy for a 16 day vacation. We will be visiting Venice, Florence, CT and Rome (5 days). The family members we are traveling with leave very early on day 14 so we have 2 extra days before we head home. I was thinking about going to Sorrento early in the morning on Friday and staying the night and that would give us all day Saturday in the area before heading back to Rome Saturday night for our flight out the next morning. Is that enough time or should we stay closer to the Rome area? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I did something similar, but I took a train to Florence rather than Rome on my last day. Starting out we left mid morning from Rome to Sorento and on the way we stopped at Pompeii. The next day taking the water ferries we visited Positano and Amalfi. We had a great time. So, I certainly feel that you can see a little of the Amalfi Coast given what time you have. It will be pushing it somewhat but it will be so worth it. Do IT!

Just got back from Sorrento. I would highly recommend it as a place to power down after an intense tour of your other destinations. Sorrento has some beautiful hotels out on the Via Capo with spectacular views. Sorrento is not much in the way of ancient history or art. In fact, Italians consider a resort. Bring a bathing suit for a swim in Mediterranean. Enjoy leisurely walks and fresh seafood and lemoncello. There is excellent shopping. I bought a pair of handmade shoes from a little shop. It was priceless. The storefront has all the styles to select from and the shoe maker has his workshop in full view.

I'd say do it. However think in advance what you want from Sorrento. If its to see the ruins in the area, or go to the Amalfi coast, or a day trip to Capri (pick one or two of the above, don't try to do them all!) then I'd say go for it. If its just to relax in a smaller town then I'd suggest something closer.

If going to Pompeii you could stop there on the way down to Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana train, check your bags (make sure they still have bag check), and then continue on to Sorrento. With a few hours tour you'll still be in Sorrento by late afternoon and have Saturday for something else.

Thank you very much for all your input. When stopping in Pompeii on the way to Sorrento do you have to adjust your train ticket accordingly?

Another question... would you say that Sorrento is similar to CT or very different?

If you go to Sorrento - spend your time there. It will take you a long time to get there and again on your return to Rome the next day!

Sorrento is our favorite place in Italy and it's well worth it for your last two days. As some have said, I would not try to do everything...we love actually being in Sorrento itself, walking around and exploring. It's a wonderful town with very nice, friendly people and unbelievable views. They now have a Hop-On Hop-Off bus which is very enjoyable.

You can buy train tix that are good for only point-to-point, or on the weekend they offer a day pass. So you'll have options if you're going Naples to Sorrento and stopping in Pompeii. BTW I personally liked Herculaneum better than Pompeii, and if I ever went back to Pompeii I would take a guided tour instead of doing it on our own.
