I have family that has a home in Salerno. Any tips on stransportation options, rail,bus private to get to amalfi coast as day trips??

The only public transportation that you will find from Salerno up the Amalfi coast is the bus. And, the most frequent bus will be the SITA bus. There are no trains. Also, the SITA bus from Salerno will only go to Amalfi. To go farther north, you transfer to the SITA bus that goes from Amalfi to Sorrento.

Train is best option for visiting Naples and Pompeii. There are frequent trains to Naples and many stop in Pompei (the modern town). You can walk (20-30 min) or take a bus or taxi from the station to the historical Roman site of Pompeii.
