looking for an english speaking catholic mass/schedule in Cortona.......
thanks to all who were kind enough to write back and care. I will keep your tips in mind. First time to the Motherland but I am sure I am not the first of my type to make this visit. We will fumble through somehow. Thanks again to all!
Dan, I searched on Google for "messa in inglese cortona" and nothing particular came up; furthermore, I went to the Diocese of Arezzo web site, looking both at their Mass Schedule pages and doing a search for "inglese", and nothing pertaining to Masses came up. It could be, and is very likely, that there are simply no Masses in English in that area. I am sure that if you go to Mass in Italian it will be a positive experience. You will know what is happening and, even if you don't understand the preaching and so forth, will surely have a pleasant experience. The Mass readings in English can be found on http://www.usccb.org/readings, so you can find out what the readings are in advance even if you don't understand them in Italian. Have a nice trip.
Why not just attend a Catholic Mass in the local tongue? I have done this and found worshiping with the locals in their language can be a very fulfilling religious experience. I have attended Mass spoken in German, Italian, Czech, Croatian, Polish, Hungarian and French while in Europe. Being Catholic, I understand the order of the Mass (which for the most part is standard wherever you travel) and thus know what part of the Mass we are at. I can pronounce German and Italian so I have attempted to recite the prayers in their missalette in those languages. In the other languages....well, I just pray English during "The Lord's Prayer", etc. I assume God can understand my poor German and can detect my English amongst the Hungarians I am worshiping with!!
Hi Dan from Grand Rapids- I am from Marshall:)
We have been staying in Verona for almost a month and have not come across an English speaking mass. I brought along a copy of the Magnificat and picked up an "Order of the Mass" book which has the mass in seven (I think) languages. I found it at a Pauline bookstore here, but I am sure your local bookshop could order it for you. Between the two of those, I have really enjoyed going to mass here. The locals seem very friendly and happy to see someone enjoying the parish for what it was intended for. Happy Travels!
Hi Dan, try masstimes.org. You can locate mass times throughout the world and there are often links to the individual parishes. Maybe the Parish site will have info in English. I'm not sure if the bishop's office in Rome can direct you, but you can try emailing/calling them. Site is pnac.org. I participated in mass in Assisi. It was in English, but the form is the same and it's easy to follow in Italian. Experiencing the universality firsthand was incredible. Beautiful and moving experience.did I wish I understood the homily? Yes. Do I feel like I missed out? No. I hope you find what you're looking for, but if you don't, I dare say you won't disappointed. All the best , Alison
