Hi there, My sister is 16 and traveling to Europe alone for the first time (I am meeting her at the airport in Rome).
Do the immigration and customs officers in the Fiumicino airport speak English?
Yes, she will have no problems. They get millions of English speaking visitors every year so tell her not to worry. Donna
Sarah, As the previous reply mentioned, the staff at FCO will speak English (in varying degrees of proficiency), as they deal with thousands of English-speaking travellers every day. I'm assuming you have transport from the airport into Rome all organized? If travelling on the Leonardo Express, DON'T forget to validate! Cheers!
I find that these days, the immigration officials at European airports often don't speak to me at all. I hand them my passport, they scan it into their system, find a page to stamp (often one with no other stamps - can you say "marking your territory"?), and hand it back to me - all without a word being exchanged. Well, I always say "hello," but they don't always answer even that. But yes, if there is a need for communication at FCO, they will find an English speaker.
