Empty Medal Box Purchased From Vatican Museum The Gift Shop

Hello Travelers,

I had a question for you all. I'm not sure if this is the correct place for it, but I figured this section was the closest.

At the Vatican Museum, I purchased as a gift Bronze Coin of the Canonization of John XXIII and John Paul II. Being a gift, I didn't bother opening it to ensure that the coin was in there.

After giving the gift, we realized that the box was completely empty, no coin in it at all. My question is: if I emailed the Vatican Gift Shop here, http://www.vaticangift.com/contents/en-us/contactus.html, should I even expect anything back?

Obviously I can't go back to get a new one, but traveling that far to get home and realize it was empty was frustrating.

There's no harm in trying. If you can provide a copy of the receipt that might help. Explain the situation and see what happens.

I think it is going to be a big hill to climb. If I am the retailer, I think I would have a couple of questions. First, you purchased something without looking to see what was there? That has to be a bit unusual. Second, has the box always been in your immediate possession or was it in check luggage where someone else might have taken it? Third, my experience with European retailers is that they do not have the attitude that the customer is always right that is more common in the US.

I would give it a shot but my expectation would not be high. Another one of these lesson learned situation.

I'd like to think the Vatican would do right by you. They may ask you to cover postage, I suppose. Let us know what happens.

Thanks everybody.

I did email them, but have heard nothing since Sunday. I'm not expecting anything to be honest. The coin was in our possession our entire trip; except for our luggage having a flyer saying it was searched by TSA, but I don't think they would steal anything. That would be a little too obvious.
