Emirates and carry on baggage

Has anyone flown Emirates to Europe? The carry on baggage rules are for one item to weigh less than 7 kg and a small purse which fits in the palm of my hand which can be used for the passport (a direct quote from the customer service agent) This question is directed to women specifically. What sort of purse (size) did you bring? It seems odd that any size purse is not allowed. Were you able to store anything under the seat in front of you or just in the overhead bin?
Any info about your carry on baggage experience and what you brought on board will be appreciated!

Just bring a purse that fits inside your carry-on bag, which might be your "day bag," rather than your full luggage, or might be a collapsible tote that you don't use every day. Check in any larger item. They will weigh your carry-on. It's hard to pack under 7 kg for your whole trip and you have to start with a very light backpack. (I did to it once when flying Emirates because I needed to quickly get to a non-protected, non-affiliated connecting flight that only operated twice a week.)
