Emilia-Romagna region

Hello,

Please share your favourite city/town in this area. We are visiting in August and only have 3-4 days. We are starting in Venice then in Trento for 2 nights. Our last 3 nights are in Cinque Terre and we leave from Milan.
We live in Vancouver, BC, Canada so being near a lake isn't as important as a historic hilltop town or visiting a castle.

Thank you.

It is probably going to be VERY hot in August. I return to the States for the summers. Most of my friends went into the mountains in August to escape the heat. I prefer Bologna to Modena (and I live in the province of Modena). My town of Vignola is a wonderful small town (with a castle La Rocca) Parma, Ferrara (Este family castle), Ravenna are also nice towns. This area is called the Terre dei Castelli so there are castles to be seen. We are also in the flatland (pianura- river valley) None of the towns I mentioned are hill top towns. Guiglia is higher. Castlevetro is a very nice small town.

We enjoyed Parma a great deal. Lots of culture and, of course, Parmigiano Reggiano and Parma ham. But Bologna is a great city. We love Emilia-Romagna. Also highly recommend visiting the Ferrari museum in Modena.

I’ve stayed in these four cities in the Emilia-Romagna region multiple times and would rate them in order:

Ravenna, Parma, Ferrara, Bologna.

If you stay in Ferrara, it’s a direct train to go see the gorgeous mosaics at Ravenna. Ferrara also has a castle in the center of the city and an excellent archeological museum.
