In between time in Bologna and Florence, we plan to rent a car and spend 3-4 days touring the Emilia Romagna region. We are looking for advice on the best small towns and/or agritourismos to consider visiting during this time. While we plan to visit Parma and Modena we are hoping to stay in the country side.
Thanks in advance.
Our favorite very, very small towns in Emilia Romagna:
Portico di Romagna about halfway between Ravenna and Florence (nice hotel with good food: Al Vecchio Convento --- they arranged a truffle-hunt with dogs for us. Be sure to climb the tower and to cross the old bridge in town. I wish you could go at Christmastime when the town displays hundreds of creative, crazy, homemade nativity scenes along all the streets and in the parks and the tower.)
Brisighella up in the hills (walk on the donkey path that is inside a building.)
Comacchio in the Po Delta (cool bridge and canals in town)
Cesenatico on the coast (its Maritime Museum is a collection of boats floating on the big canal that runs through town. Eat tigelle at the Tigelleria Ross e Gio.)
We spent 3 nights in the tiny town of Montese and had a blast! Riccardo Solmi of Trekking Italy set up a lunch at an agriturismo, a balsamico tasting, a hike along the Gothic Line, and a tour of a parmigiano reggiano farm and operation. We spent one day on the hike and cheese tour and another day at the nearby Ferrari Museum in Maranello.
We went with another couple and still talk about what a unique and fun time we had. PM me if you want more info. I have a lot of details.
