We are going to Borghese Gallery (first week of October) and hoping to catch bus 116 leaving from pantheon. What are our chances of getting on this bus in the morning since I heard it is very small and holds very few people? We are a family of 4 adults and hope to catch it between 830am and 1000am

With 4 people, I don't think a taxi from the Pantheon to the Borghese Gallery will break the bank. So you have a back up plan.

Start early as you may have to take "the next bus." But Romans commute a little later so 8:00 is better than 9:00. Cram yourselves on if necessary. You can always have a coffee at the Borghese while waiting.
You can also take the 63 by walking over to Via del Corso and getting off at the Puccini stop, very close to the galleria. The 63 is a regular-sized bus.

We were in Rome last year in September and took the 116 several times and never had a problem, nor was it ever totally packed, in either direction. Coming back from the Borghese it got a little strange, when upon leaving the park the driver pulled over and just got out. It was his break time, but he never said a word. There was another 116 parked in front of him with no driver which we ended up getting in, which left several minutes later after that driver came back.
