Does Italy require a 3 prong of 2 prong adaptor?
depends on the hotel. I've seen both. My adapter is 2 prong and works fine.
Don't need a converter...all my electronics are up to date and rated to 220, iphone/ipad, Nook, camera battery charger, etc.
plan for everything, bring every type of adapter (I think at the moment there are only 4), they take up no space and weigh nothing
The 2 prong adapter commonly used in Europe works in Italy.
When I was in Scandinavia recently, my hotel gave me a neat fold away adapter left in one of their rooms. It works on all the world's electrical outlets, so I'll never need another adapter. The only thing is the heat sink on my converter really gets hot when recharging my laptop. Fortunately, many modern electronics work on both 110 and 220 volts so I don't have to use the converter..
2 prong works fine, 3 prong is for a grounded outlet.
Be sure any appliance you bring is rated for 110-240 volts our you will burn it up. I have melted more than one! The one that seems difficult to find is curling iron. Be sure an check.
jgs,
As the others have mentioned, it's important to verify that any devices you're travelling with are designed for operation on both 115 and 220 VAC electrical systems. Two pin Plug Adaptors will work fine in Italy even with grounded appliances (although the ground won't be connected with a two pin adaptor). If you want a three pin (grounded) adaptor you'll have to buy the specific model for Italy as it's unique.
