Electrical adapters/converters

Can I purchase USA to Italy electrical adapters easily and conveniently in Italy? Leaving in 24 hrs and too late to get one here. Thanks.

Yes, should be no issue. Look for either a local hardware type shop, or something that serves tourists. Larger hotels usually have a gift shop that sells them, I have also picked up one in airports.

I would think that a store that sells phones or tablets would stock them.

You may be able to borrow and adapter from your hotel. A lot of adapters are left behind.

tp,

The first and most important thing you'll have to do is check EACH device that you'll be travelling with to determine if the device is designed for operation on 220 VAC electrical systems. Look for the words "Input Voltage" which will be listed on the device or the charger.

If you try to connect 115 VAC devices in Europe they will self destruct immediately, possibly in spectacular fashion with sparks and smoke and possibly trip power to a portion of the hotel (which will not make the hotel staff happy).

You should be able to find the common two-pin (ungrounded) Euro Plug Adapters at gadget shops at the airport on your way through. I'd suggest buying at least two, as they're small and easy to misplace. Buying at the airport means you'll have something when you step off the plane, and won't have to go looking for an Adaptor when the battery is flat in your gadgets and you're jet lagged.

If any of your appliances have a grounded (three pin) Plug, those can often be used with an ungrounded Adaptor but of course the ground won't be connected. Note that grounded Adaptors are more specific to country, so the model for Italy is different than Switzerland or other parts of Europe.

Since we were robbed in Rome my plug for my IPhone was stolen. I bought a cheap generic one at the autostrada and for almost 15 euros it did not work properly. I ended at an apple store in Florence and for 25 Euros each bought 2 which work perfect.
