electric plugs in Italy

I have two sets of international plugs and adapters. The host for my class in Lucca says that Italy does not use the same plugs as the rest of continental Europe. I do not remember having a problem in my past trips to Italy although they were several years ago. Does anyone have experience with Italy only plugs and if so where does one acquire one?

"two sets of international plugs and adapters" - which country's plug type are these adapters for?
Are they 2-pin or 3-pin adapters? Are the appliances you will be using 3-pin or 2-pin?

If it is 2-pin, like most phone chargers are, then you are OK, the two pins are the same as the rest of Europe.
If it is 3-pin, yes Italy puts the 3rd pin in a different place to other countries. You then need a different adapter for Italy.

You can buy adapters in Italy, in shops catering for tourists.

My recollection is the same as yours, the basic two round prong plug will work with just about any low power application. The electricity is no different than the rest of the continent, 240V, 50 HZ, but Italy does have it's own grounding system (I can digress and wonder why an Economic Union that controls so much minutiae in so many matters cannot standardize on a common grounding system for outlets, Italy is not the only case; Oh Well) it is 3 prongs in a row, with the center prong being the ground. If the devices you are taking require a ground, and are high amperage, then it may be an issue, for small items/electronics, your two prong adapter (providing your devices are 100-240V input) will be fine. If your device requires anything other than an adapter (requires converting voltage) leave it at home.

I guess I can add, a 2 prong slim adapter will work in any outlet (though ungrounded). If you have a three prong adapter, then it will only work in a grounded outlet. Like it used to be in the US (and still to a degree) many properties may not have grounded outlets. So if you bring 3 prong adapters for grounding, have some two prong ones just in case as well.

The three-prong will work on every outlet in Italy. The two prong are slightly larger in diameter and will not work on some outlets, but not to many.

Caryn,

It would help to have some idea on what type of devices you'll be connecting via the Plug Adaptors. If you're using them for mobile phone or camera chargers, many of those only have two pins so your existing Adaptors should work fine. If any of your devices have a grounding pin (laptops?) then you'll need the proper Italy grounding plug adaptor Here's an example - https://www.amazon.com/OREI-Italy-Adapter-Plug-Type/dp/B008JCVGT0?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_2 .

Other countries on the continent (Germany / France / Switzerland) use a different style for Plugs with grounding pin.

This is a good example of the two pin model - https://www.amazon.com/Ceptics-Europe-Adapter-European-Countries/dp/B007YL84VA . I always like to pack several as they're small and easy to misplace.

You should be able to find similar models at local luggage or travel stores in your area, or at stores such as Wal-Mart, Target, Radio Shack or wherever.

Having lived in Italy for over 2 years, I can tell you that there is no really simple answers and that Italians themselves often must use adapters from plush to plug. There are 3 principle types of plugs: 10 amp which uses a fatter prong, 10 amp which uses a thinnner prong, and schucko with a round plus holding two or three prongs. My advice would be to get an adapter that takes US prongs to a ten amp Italian plug

Every Euro store in Italy will sell an adaptor /spacer that will let you put some plugs into the deeper sockets.
I've stayed in apartments in Italy that have had 3 types of plugs in one room!
You won't know until you get there.
There are a few electrical shops in Lucca that will sell you the right adaptors/convertors.

Thanks all. I do have the two prong and the three prong. I really only need to use it for my phone charger and my camera. I will take what I have and if that is still not workable than I will have to ask my host for help.
