Ahhhh...On Trenitalia's website yesterday there was a big RED LETTER warning across the top of the page; of course, it went away when I flipped the site to English...I meant to go back and do my best at reading the Italian warning, but forgot. "I forgot" That will be on my headstone...

That was the day I was traveling from Rovigo (westish of Venice) to Rome. A 3 hour journey turned into 7! We got the news when we pulled into Florence that we were diverting to Pisa, meaning that instead of one leg of the triangle we had to travel two. The announcements were very vague - "a problem on the line ahead". I speak Italian and chatted up one of the staff who was looking particularly harried and got a bit more information. The main problem for our Eurostar train was being ed into the schedule - we had to stop often to wait for the slower local trains, and there were many places where there weren't extra tracks for the faster trains. I had no idea how serious it was until I saw the tv news that evening. I find that it's always wise to have plenty of "wiggle room" in the travel schedule.

Do you think this would affect a trip from Rome to Florence, or is it just trains going TO Rome? We don't make the trip until September 4th but you know how long these things can take...

I was in Rome during the fire, it was confusing for a few days but everything was rerouted and very few trains were still being cancelled by the fourth day, although the Tiburtina station will not reopen right away.
