Isn't that where Napoleon was exiled?

Yes. But not recently. When I lived there (1980s).
I guess not much has changed. The crossing from Piombino to Portoferraio is about one hour. Always had a car. If you have a rental check on the restrictions since some companies prohibit taking the cars by ferry. My base was in Pomonte because a high school buddy of mine had a beach house there. The island is small so with a car you can get anywhere quickly. The top attraction is beaches and scuba diving. The second top attraction is beaches and scuba diving. Since I used to go there when I was in my 20s, my other top attraction was girls in a bikini. Not sure what you are interested in. There is the Napoleon San Martino villa. Unfortunately in my 20s that kind of stuff wasn’t as important as girls in a bikini, so never managed to visit it. If you go, let me know how it is. My wife keeps bugging me about taking her to Elba, but she refuses to wear bikini (she says she’s past that age) so I guess I’ll take her to Napoleon’s villas.

I was spending the summer with an Italian family in the late 1980's and visited Elba. Seems like a lot of Italians spend their month off from work (August) on Elba Island relaxing on the beach all day. Not much else going on.
