Effect the terrible cyclone that hit Italy on travel in early April 2026

I've been seeing the terrible devastation to siciliy and along Southern Italy - as well as other European coastal locations and my heart goes out to all who have been affected.

We have flights in and out of Rome March 24 - departing April 9. we have an accommodations and tours planned for 3 nights 4 days in Rome then train to Naples and two nights in Naples with plans to see either Herculaneum or Pompeii while there.

We were planning to fly from Naples to Catania Sciliy (to see Ortiga, Taormina and Cefalu, Palermo and fly from Palermo back to Rome to fly home. Was planning on public transit to get from place to place.

I am wondering realistically what the cyclone effect may be on the towns we had planned to visit - i.e. train travel I imagine will be impacted as from what I see there has been damage to the train tracks and many coastal towns / roads as well as mud slides even happening the past few days.

Did Amalfi coast get similar damage? What would be suggestions for where to visit from March 29 - April 8?

Suggestions welcome.

Again, My heart goes out to all towns and people of Italy that have been affected by this cyclone - it appears to have been quite a storm!

Thanks for the quick reply but I'm more concerned about train travel up the coast which I believe there was some major damage to tracks as well as I believe all of the towns on our itinerary are coastal towns - I've seen photos and videos of damage all along that coast????

I’m only telling you what I read from trustworthy sources on another forum. By March this will be a blip. Watch train travel near Catania for updates if you must, but otherwise there is nothing to worry about.

You are overreacting, because of the "news storm" that's worse than any cyclone.
It's been days, the only railway that's still blocked is the Messina-Catania because the railroad bed collapsed at Scaletta. Literally, you can see the tracks hanging in the air!
High-schoolers and commuters living in the area have been warned they will have to depend on substitute buses up to February 7, trenitalia.com shows the same warning if you try to book. Unfortunately, the works could take longer: the local press report about 45 days or more.
I don't know if you are going to take a train from Catania to Messina, but even if the works at Scaletta lasted till April... well, you'll simply take a bus.
