EES update for FCO, 4/16

EES Rome 4/16 update

EES update for Rome. EES is fully implemented at FCO now. I entered yesterday and thought I would report current status.

There are a series of machines that US citizens (and those with chips in passports) are directed to prior to passport control. You scan your passport, have your facial scan done, and then they scan 4 fingerprints from your right hand. The fingerprint scanning is where people sometimes run into trouble. It is very important to press as hard as you can on the screen to get them to register. One man used his other hand to add pressure on top and then they registered.

Next were two lines. The first was extremely long and was for people unable to use egates since no chip. Easily an hour long. The line I was directed to was for those who can use e-gate. It was 20 people long.

At the e-gate we basically repeated the same steps as when registering for EES. Scan passport, facial recognition, scan fingerprints. Those that didn’t press hard enough for fingerprints to register were sent to the end of another long line. You can bet I pushed down on the screen and made it through!

Total time from registering to making it through the e-gate was about 10 minutes.

I wish I could report luggage pick up was as smooth. Long wait to discover bag still in London. Another long wait to talk to luggage claim. In theory, my bag will be delivered to my hotel sometime today. Everything important (meds, papers, money, a few changes of clothing ) was in my carryon so I will be fine.

Edited to add: my suitcase was delivered today!

I wonder how it works if a part of one of your fingertips is missing due to an accident? Guess we'll soon find out.

Hope you get your luggage soon.

My wife's fingerprints wouldn't register sufficiently on the scanner at FCO. After 3 tries, she was directed to continue ahead and just before the exit was directed to a nearby station where after a 5 minute wait her fingerprints were scanned with the help of an attendant who could see if the scans succeeded in real time. Total time at 6:30 am, April 1, about 30 minutes.

My husband and I arrived at FCO at 8:15am on April 8th. Neither of our fingerprints would scan at the EES machines…maybe we were not pressing hard enough? We continued on to another short line…again fingerprints would not scan, so we were sent on to manual passport control where our passports were stamped. Neither of the lines we were sent to had more than 5/6 people, so we were through to baggage claim in @20 minutes. Fortunately our bags were there.

Thanks, Carol, and to everyone who is chiming in about their experiences. It is helpful for those of us with upcoming trips. I will make sure to press my fingertips with vigor!

@KD-my right index finger, my left ring finger, my right pinkie, my right index finger and both my thumbs all have scar tissue that have altered my fingerprints. I’ve never not been able to psss through a fingerprint scanner. Yes, I recently passed through Milan. Yes, it was a longer than usual wait, but, then again, I usually pass through there quickly. Pressing down as hard as I could I found that by pressing only my fingertips and keeping my hand elevated put more pressure on it and it read them within seconds. Good luck to the rest of y’all
