eating out

My family of four will be going to Rome this summer. We are not big eaters, and like to share items off the menu (like order one entre and get two plates). I have not read anything about this when reading about places to eat. In USA this is not a problem, what about Italy? Also, what about the 'doggie bag'? Thanks!

The portion sizes in Italy are not nearly as large as our USA "supersizes". Many restaurants do the family style idea with a single entree for the group. You should not have trouble sharing. Doggie bags are not the custom, but with smaller portion sizes you probably won't need them.

You might try the tavola calda style eateries that let you choose how much pizza, pasta, etc that you want. All this talk of food is making my mouth water. Best of luck!

Another thing you can do is order antipasti which are appetisers and primi which are first courses and usually pasta dishes. We are also a family of four and light eaters. We would order a couple of antipasti, a couple of primi and then share a couple of desserts. No one seemed to mind.

My husband and I share all the time. We get one anti-pasti, one primi (pasta) and one seconde (entre - meat, chicken, fish) and we share it all. Our first trip there we just put the plate between us and started to nibble from each side. The waiter saw us and ran to get a second plate and made a show of dividing up the dish - making sure it was equal on both plates. We have asked for two plates ever since and never had anyone look at us funny. We eat in all levels of service from pizzeria to formal restaurants. Never a problem.

Enjoy!!!
