I've poured over the graffiti wall and now I'll ask about inexpensive cafes/eateries or whatever they are called in Sorrento. We will be there one week in April. Also are there take out places since we are renting a house? thanks. kathy
DiFranco's Pizza, listed in the RS Guide, was top notch casual pizza, to dine in on picnic benches or take out.
One of the best restaurants we ate at was called (of all things!) The Red Lion. Excellent food, many locals eat there. Only problem was it took forever to get served (and we had young kids with us who were starving). Directions: From the station, walk down the hill and turn left onto Corso Italia. Then take either the first or second left (there should be a sign here) and walk about 50 metres up the hill. Or better: from the station walk left (30metres), you'll see the Red Lion in front of you on the right. Also, one of the best gelaterias (ice cream parlors) is on that street or the next.
Eating out prices on the whole are not cheap in Sorrento. The general rule that applies elsewhere also applies there ie if the place has a view or is special in some way you pay a premium to eat there. That being said you can eat for less if you do your homework. Da Emilia's in the Marina Grande, Sorrento's original fishing harbour, is a very reasonable fish restaurant You can eat outside or in depending on the weather. It is not high end but the food is good.
Davide's icecream is reckoned to be the best in Sorrento but on the whole they are all pretty good.
There are at least two places that do prepared pasta
dishes to take away. They are both cakeshops, unfortunately I can't remember their names.
the first is on the right hand side of the road (Corso Italia) from Piazza Tasso to the station. It also has other savoury foods.
the other is in the opposite direction from Piazza Tasso on the left hand side towards the hospital end of Corso Italia, it is also a small cafeteria.
There are three supermarkets, the most obvious one, Standa, is also on the road to the station on the right hand side just beyond the cinema. There are also several small grocery/deli shops throughout the town. So no shortage of places to get provisions.
thanks so much. k
Just had a "Google map" walk around Sorrento and saw one of the places I mentioned for take away. It is called Bar Rita and you will see that the sign says it is a Rosticceria ie hot food to take away. It also happens to be between the cinema and the Standa supermarket so not hard to find.
I have never seen Sorrento so quiet but then, from the angle of the sun/shadows and the closed shops, realised it must be siesta time! Have a go yourself, it's fun.
